Nikola Tsolov claimed his third Formula 3 win of the season, and his first in a feature race, after the security automobile got here out to refute his team-mate Laurens van Hoepen, who had been patiently sitting in second place throughout the race.
The ART pair lined up side by side on the front row initially and went wheel-to-wheel into Turn 1, heading towards the pit lane as Tsolov passed his pole-sitting team-mate.
The move saw each drivers overtake championship contender Leonardo Fornaroli (Trident), while Noel Leon, who had began from fourth, took the chance to maneuver his Van Amersfoort Racing automobile into the ultimate podium position.
Despite radio messages from van Hoepen asking ART to swap driver positions so he could higher protect his tyres, the team decided against team orders. When it seemed an accident was inevitable, the security automobile got here out for the ultimate two laps, stopping an exhilarating finale.
Things later became much more frustrating for Dutchman van Hoepen when his automobile failed a technical inspection attributable to not meeting the minimum weight requirement, leading to him being disqualified.
As is all the time the case on the Hungaroring, overtaking was of the utmost importance. The most striking move was by Christian Mansell, who moved up from eighth on the grid to fourth by the finish. His most notable feat was a well-practiced attack on Santiago Ramos (Trident) at the primary corner, which gave him fifth place on lap three.
Two-time Silverstone winner Arvid Lindblad (Prema) saw his memorable weekend end prematurely when he collided with MatĂas Zagazeta on the approach to Turn 4 on lap 21, with the championship contender selecting a wider than usual line on the straight, giving Jenzer’s driver no room to manoeuvre.
As a result, Zagazeta withdrew to the evacuation road and Lindblad was thrown to the curb. However, the stewards decided that Zagazeta was the motive force at fault and gave him a five-place grid penalty for the subsequent race wherein he would compete.
Despite the shortage of motion, the principal race in Hungary had a huge effect on the championship standings, with Fornaroli and Mansell closing in on the highest three – Gabriele Mini (Prema), Luke Browning (Hitech) and Arvid Lindblad (Prema) – who didn’t rating points after ranging from the back of the grid and struggling to shut the gap in Callum Voisin’s (Rodin) DRS automobile.
Fornaroli's fourth place means the highest 4 within the championship are actually covered by 10 points, with Mansell now just 22 points off first. Dino Beganovic (Prema) and Oliver Goethe (Campos) are the last of those with a sensible likelihood now, after ending tenth and ninth respectively. Goethe is the lowest-placed driver within the standings and sits 32 points behind the leader with just two weekends to go.
