Penske Entertainment announced its purchase of the Grand Prix Association of Long Beach – acquired from longtime owner Gerald R. Forsythe. The historic Long Beach Grand Prix, the longest-running road race in Southern California, now joins the likes of the IndyCar Series, Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Detroit Grand Prix as a part of the portfolio of brands of Penske Entertainment, a subsidiary of Penske Corporation.
Next 12 months might be the fiftieth edition of this historic event, and a special program has been planned for the occasion. The race will return to network television, with FOX broadcasting the event on Sunday, April 13.
“We are incredibly proud to be the new stewards of this esteemed and iconic event,” said Roger Penske.
“This is the most historic and prestigious road course race in North America, and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to work with (Long Beach Grand Prix General Manager) Jim Michaelian and his great team in Long Beach to ensure continued success and growth for the long term. This race and its loyal fans mean so much to the entire IndyCar community, and we look forward to a special 50th anniversary celebration in April.”
Michaelian expanded on his thoughts on the importance of Penske taking command of the event.
“As we prepare to celebrate a truly extraordinary milestone, the 50th anniversary of this incredible event, it is fitting that we have such exciting and important news to share about its future,” Michaelian said.
“Roger and the Penske Entertainment team understand the unique history and unique qualities that give us such a robust foundation and might be ideal partners as we proceed to deliver an exceptional race weekend for our fans. I also want to focus on the numerous contributions that previous owners Jerry Forsythe and the late Kevin Kalkhoven have made to the success of our event over the past 19 years.
According to a press release, Penske Entertainment “plans to invest in enhancing and enhancing the experience for race fans, sponsors and hospitality customers.” He is already heavily involved in promotions for various IndyCar events at Iowa Speedway, the Milwaukee Mile and the Arlington Grand Prix scheduled for 2026.
“This is an important racing weekend, not only on our calendar, but across the motorsports landscape,” said Mark Miles, president and CEO of Penske Entertainment. “We are committed to maintaining the core attributes that make it best in class, while working on exciting and bold initiatives that will make its future even bigger and brighter.”
The 3,968-kilometer course, which circles the Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center, typically attracts greater than 190,000 spectators over three-day weekends. Additionally, the Grand Prix Foundation of Long Beach has donated greater than $4.2 million to those in need within the Long Beach community.
“The Grand Prix is an incredibly important and vibrant asset to our community and an annual event that drives commerce, attracts tourism and elevates cultural connectivity throughout our city,” said Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson.
“Penske Entertainment will be a committed and energetic partner going forward as we strive to preserve and enhance the rich history and strong legacy of this event. We look forward to a great collaboration that will benefit everyone who calls Long Beach home.”
