Maloney joins Abt for the 2024/25 Formula E season

0

Formula 2 race winner Zane Maloney will make his Formula E debut later this yr, joining the Abt Formula E team ahead of the upcoming 2024/25 season.

The 20-year-old's first appearance in the electrical vehicle championship will happen on December 7 on the Sao Paulo E-Prix, before starting pre-season testing in Valencia on November 4-7.

Maloney, who also became Sauber's Formula One reserve driver this yr and will probably be the primary Barbadian driver to race in Formula E, was previously Andretti's test and reserve driver for the past two seasons.

During this time, Maloney took part in several beginner test sessions, including in Berlin, Rome and Misano, and had already tried out the brand new Gen3 Evo machine, in addition to the primary drivetrain created by the brand new Lola and Yamaha collaboration.

“I'm really looking forward to this challenge. It's an amazing opportunity to affix Abt, Lola and Yamaha on this latest journey for them,” Maloney told Motorsport.com.

“It's an enormous step in my profession to be employed by such a tremendous group of individuals.

“I don't have any expectations of where we will be now, there is no pressure and we just try to improve every day.”

Maloney currently sits third within the F2 standings, having won each the sprint and have races at Rodin Motorsport's opening event in Bahrain, but will now miss the ultimate two rounds in Qatar and Abu Dhabi attributable to his latest Formula E commitments.

He replaces Nico Muller at Abt after the Swiss driver joined Andretti and Maloney partnered with Formula E stalwart Lucas di Grassi.

“We can't wait to have Zane as part of the team in Season 11, and he has already brought a breath of fresh air to our first days working together,” added Abt CEO Thomas Biermaier.

“Giving opportunities to young talents and supporting them has been a strong tradition at ABT for many decades and that is why it was clear to us that we would also follow this path in Formula E.”

This season will probably be the primary latest partnership between Abt, Lola and Yamaha, and di Grassi is “very positively surprised” by the team's progress to this point.

Maloney admits that the chance to affix prestigious brands in the beginning of the journey was an incentive to affix the project.

“I see it as an opportunity, it's obviously exciting,” he said.

“If I used to be 35, I might probably give it some thought a little bit otherwise, but I'm young and able to tackle the challenge of developing a team with amazing engineers and Lucas, who’s way more experienced, to learn from him too.

“I can't wait, we don't know where we will probably be [in the pecking order] but I’m optimistic and I do know that everybody within the team could be very motivated to get to the front of the pack.

“Our goal year over year is to run the most competitive program possible, and Myles will be a huge piece of that puzzle in 2025.” Brunner said. “2024 has really shown what this organization is able to but we’re at all times striving for more, Myles will bring a brand new perspective to the team and I believe combining him with our staff and Yuven (Sundaramoorthy) will make us way more competitive in 2025 .

Force Indy president Rod Reid added: “It is vital that the organization is interested not only in driver development, but also understands our mission to attract a wider audience to the sport. Abel has been a strong supporter of our efforts since opening Force Indy across the street from their store in 2020. We look forward to a successful season with them.”

What M-Sport expects from the “extended hearing” of the Seska WRC

0

M-Sport is treating Martins Sesek's appearance in Rally Chile as an “extended audition” within the World Rally Championship because the Ford team continues to evaluate the young driver's skills for the long run.

Rising star Sesks and co-driver Renars Francis won their third Ford Puma Rally1 appearance this 12 months after impressive performances, ending fifth and seventh respectively within the rounds in Poland and Latvia earlier this 12 months.

The opportunity to pilot a non-hybrid Puma in Chile was made possible due to further support from the WRC organizer, which helped finance the Latvians' last two appearances in Rally1.

Sesks's status as a future talent was enhanced by taking his first stage wins in Latvia on his technique to fighting for a probable third place, before his Puma suffered a mechanical problem on the ultimate stage.

The 24-year-old's performance impressed M-Sport enough to emerge as a possible candidate for more races in the long run because the team considers its options for 2025.

Team principal Richard Millener is looking forward to seeing how Sesks will perform in Chile – a rally that shall be a very latest challenge for the 2023 European Rally Championship runner-up.

“I think there is a lot of interest in his skills from many parties and there are a lot of discussions about Latvia, Poland, which are very similar events, home events and his good knowledge, can this be replicated in some way?” Millener told Autosport.

“I don't need to expect him to fight for the rostrum again in Latvia. We would really like to see one other rally with none problems, where he finishes without mistakes and successfully achieves a very good result, which I feel will be achieved by also being smart.

“The fight for the title shall be really big and Chile can also be quite a difficult rally. It's fast and technical. I wouldn't be surprised if there have been a number of accidents.

“If he can get into the highest five again, that's unbelievable, that's more of a goal, so I feel it's a little bit of an extended audition. However, I actually cannot say that he’ll sign a contract with us for next 12 months. It's only a matter of seeing what else we will do for these young drivers.

“I feel he has already proven what he’s able to, and the chance to accomplish that also got here due to the push from M-Sport, but in addition due to the promoter and Martins, who has his own ideas.

“It's a good opportunity for us to see what a completely new environment throws at him without much warning. What he can do and how he goes about it.”

In addition to a set of completely latest stages to learn, Sesks runs without hybrid drive, identical to its debut in Poland. The performance deficit of the hybrid Rally1 cars was minimal on these fast gravel stages, however the deficit is more likely to increase on Chile's technical roads.

“Of course, the big challenge will be going to South America and driving a Rally1 car for the first time in Chile,” Sesks said.

“I feel it’ll be an important adventure, something latest again, and now we are attempting to organize for the rally. We observe the decks and see things much like some European rallies.

“It shall be just a little tougher for us to drive a non-hybrid automotive, but again it's a chance to indicate pace and not using a hybrid, and if we will do it there, it’ll be even higher. Our experiences from Poland and Latvia shall be very helpful in understanding the automotive. It shall be a challenge, but we’re looking forward to it. “

Sesks isn’t the one rising star to be offered a rare appearance in Rally 1 this weekend, with Toyota fielding a Sami Pajari in certainly one of 4 GR Yaris. The Finn replaced regular Takamoto Katsuta, who will survive the trip to South America.

Jota is ready to skip the WEC test in Bahrain because it focuses on Cadillac's factory program

0

Jota is just not expected to participate within the World Endurance Championships post-season testing in Bahrain because it focuses on its factory program with Cadillac.

Team principal Dieter Gass has revealed that it’s “unlikely” that Jota will participate within the official one-day test on the Bahrain International Circuit on November 3, which can follow the ultimate round of the season within the Gulf country.

This signifies that the 8 Hours of Bahrain might be the last race of the Porsche 963 with Jota's title sponsor, Hertz.

This decision will allow him to pay more attention to preparations for the 2025 WEC season, when he’ll replace Chip Ganassi Racing because the Cadillac factory team within the series.

The British team, which accomplished the Hypercar World Cup in Fuji this month, can also be in talks with General Motors regarding private use of the automotive before the tip of the 12 months.

This test will happen a while after the season finale in Bahrain, when Cadillac may also end its partnership with Ganassi within the IMSA SportsCar Championship.

“We talk about it [but] it is not finalized yet,” Gass told Autosport when asked when the team would have the option to run the Caddy LMDh.

“Before the end of the season [in November]NO. [Before] hopefully by the end of the year.”

Gass explained that Jota and Cadillac must overcome many obstacles to arrange joint testing this 12 months.

“It's more of a peripheral issue [than anything else]- he said. “You must have a automotive, but we now have to have all of the tools to drive, spare parts and every thing.

“It takes preparation, and then we can start thinking about it.”

Jota has been driving a Porsche 963 LMDh for a client since 2023 and took an outright victory at Spa in May this 12 months, sealing the championship for the privateer Hypercar teams with a round to spare.

The news that Jota would turn out to be Cadillac's recent factory WEC team was made official in August, when it was also announced that the team would enter two VR Series entries in 2025.

Gass added that there might be no contractual issues with Porsche regarding testing as Jota prepares to start a brand new chapter in its illustrious history at General Motors.

“We need to look at sports regulations, what is allowed to be tested and things like that,” he said. “I don't foresee any problems with Porsche.”

Sharing engineers

Cadillac has a powerful presence in IMSA, with Ganassi and Action Express Racing each fielding one VR Series within the GTP class.

The North American Championship will hold its final round of the season, Petit Le Mans, at Road Atlanta on October 12, three weeks before the WEC's title decision in Bahrain.

Asked if there’s a plan to send Jota engineers to an IMSA race to grasp how the VR Series works early on, Gass said: “It's very possible something like that is occurring. [With] tests [yes]we now have to see [if it is possible in] racing [as well].

“Again, every thing must be confirmed, but I believe there may also be a staff exchange [and] potentially American engineers [will] Join us.

“Maybe for us, because of personnel constraints, it’ll not be as easy for us to go to IMSA[asIMSAengineersgoingtoWECsothatwedon'tgetintotroubleswiththeregulationsthere[jakinżynierowieIMSAudającysiędoWECabyśmyniemieliproblemówztamtejszymiprzepisami[asIMSAengineersgoingtoWECsothatwedon’tgetintotroubleswiththeregulationsthere

“But with testing and things like that, it probably will happen.”

In IMSA, Wayne Taylor Racing and Andretti will leave the Acura stable in 2025 to exchange Ganassi as one in every of Cadillac's factory teams.

The team, which has an extended history with the American marque, will field two GTP entries next 12 months, while AXR will proceed to run a single automotive.

Why Toyota's Arrival Is a Game Changer for Supercars

0

It was a gray Sunday 32 years ago when Mark Skaife and Jim Richards stood on the highest step of the rostrum. It was an emotional moment; not only was the Bathurst 1000 interrupted by a torrential downpour, the drivers had only learned hours earlier that Denny Hulme, who was racing a BMW within the event, had died of a heart attack on the wheel.

Richards and Skaife drove a Nissan Skyline GT-R to victory, but that didn’t sit well with many fans below, who believed – wrongly – that another automotive within the race had a probability of beating “Godzilla.” As they booed, Richard replied, “You’re a bunch of assholes!”

The moment has stayed with many for a very long time. It definitely has with Sean Hanley, now vice chairman of sales, marketing and franchise operations at Toyota Australia. He said last week: “We often wondered what would have really happened if we had gone out and won that race. It was probably riskier to win it than not to go at all, in the tribal days.”

The 1992 race was the start of the V8 Supercar era. Australia’s V8-powered Holden Commodores and Ford Falcons were the centrepiece of touring automotive racing, and when it became skilled and industrial in 1997, it grew and grew.

Its preferred history was familiar; Australian families grew up with a Holden or Ford within the driveway and, on the rare occasion they didn’t, continued to pursue one brand or the opposite. It was a tribal rivalry of Red versus Blue.

Except… mostly, it really wasn’t. While the idea worked for the few fans who accepted it, the rivalry ran counter to one among Supercars’ other ambitions – to draw other manufacturers to the category. It worked for some time, with Volvo for 3 years, Nissan for five and Mercedes-Benz coming in, purely as a customer, servicing the Erebus Motorsport team, for 3.

Volvo, Nissan and Mercedes emerged a decade ago to disrupt Holden's battle with Ford, but none of them survived to the end

We now know that while Toyota sat on the sidelines, heavily considering entering the competition twice (in 1999 and again in 2010), the Red vs Blue history was one among the explanations it stayed away – until the Gen3 era arrived in 2023.

“I have no doubt that that tribal nature is still there,” Hanley says, “but there’s room for a new player now, and I think it’s time.”

So Toyota will enter Supercars in 2026, with Walkinshaw Andretti United because the homologation team and leader, and one other as-yet-to-be-named team, each of which is able to field two GR Supras.

For now, the news underlines that the old Supercars – the four-door Commodore and Falcon sedans – are dead

This is large, game-changing news for Supercars. Despite all of the rhetoric surrounding the Holden-Ford rivalry, the reality is that the Supercar era saw the brands’ market share shrink – and the Holden brand disappear entirely.

Toyota had been the leader of the Australian automotive marketplace for 21 consecutive years as families migrated from family sedans, which were locally manufactured, to tall SUVs and “utes”, which weren’t. Toyota dominated with none apparent desire to return and compete in Supercars, preferring lesser-known programs within the Australian Rally Championship and the single-brand Toyota Gazoo Racing Australia 86 Series.

Glory be to God. If the brand new Gen3 platform falls wanting expectations in some respects – parity and price, to call two areas that remain problematic – Supercars deserves credit for creating the framework that eventually got Toyota hooked.

The timing couldn’t be higher. Not only is the category’s current broadcast deal up for renewal at the top of next 12 months, but cable and streaming service Foxtel itself is considered available in the market. The arrival of Toyota, by far Australia’s biggest automotive advertiser, should make the category a more helpful asset – a vital factor when Gen3 cars are said to cost as much as A$800,000 (£410,000), significantly greater than originally planned.

Once the dust settles from Toyota's arrival, Ford will be looking to strengthen its teams and ensure that Toyota's second-team squad comes from GM's stable

Once the dust settles from Toyota's arrival, Ford might be trying to strengthen its teams and be sure that Toyota's second-team squad comes from GM's stable

Photo: Edge Photographics

Toyota already has a big presence in Australian sport, as title sponsor of the highest football code (AFL), Rugby League, Cricket Australia and the national Olympic and Winter Olympic teams. Its 86 Series is already supported by solid TV ad spend; whichever broadcaster signs a deal to broadcast Supercars beyond 2025 could have reason to be optimistic that involvement will increase.

There might be so much at stake before the 2026 season opener. Ford will lose one among its five two-car teams and can wish to ensure that that the team that fields the second pair of Supras is a defector from GM, not one among them. In fact, Ford may simply search out a brand new partnership itself to maintain its 10-car Supercar fleet going. Potentially, two Chevrolet teams could switch brands in 2026.

WAU could have to run parallel programs for just a little over a 12 months, one to race the Fords in 2025 and one to develop the brand new Toyotas. The supercar company could have to include the Supra into its technical framework to be sure that the difficulties which have hindered the event and technical parity of the Mustangs and Camaros don’t extend to the third model.

All of that’s in store for us in the longer term. For now, this news underlines that the old Supercars – the four-door Commodore and Falcon sedans – are dead.

The latest Supercars are sporty two-door Camaros, Mustangs and shortly Supras; a form of GT3 version from Australia. “Win on Sunday” continues to be the motto, however the cars that brands will now be attempting to sell on Monday are nothing like those on the track. Times are changing, and Supercars have done just that – hopefully for the higher.

Hamlin to 'win' Bristol elimination race

0

“I’m coming here to win,” Denny Hamlin said in a media interview Saturday. “That strategy won’t change until things change during the race.”

Hamlin entered the playoffs as one in every of the title favorites, but questionable strategy and terrible luck left him six points below the cutoff. A final-lap crash at Atlanta after deciding to ride behind to avoid chaos and a first-lap crash at Watkins Glen left him with two more finishes within the mid-20s. The excellent news? He also won the last two Cup races at Bristol.

Hamlin admitted it was frustrating, however the volatility of this round was expected given the additions of Atlanta and Watkins Glen to the round of 16.

“I think when we saw the way the tracks were being set up in the playoffs and so forth, and we knew that adding Atlanta was going to introduce some variability in the results that you can’t always predict but still have to execute,” he explained. “Obviously, you look at the top five and you look at the bottom five – that’s not something you can predict and that you couldn’t see for the first 27 or 28 races of the year, but now it’s a new game and you still have to go out there and perform, so it’s frustrating not to have the results – but today is a new opportunity.”

Fighting teammates

With several playoff upsets near the highest of the standings, Hamlin is one in every of three Joe Gibbs Racing drivers at risk of being eliminated on Saturday night. How will that change the dynamic when all of those teammates face off in Bristol?

“I'm not sure,” Hamlin admitted. “Probably a disadvantage, because we've had success here and they know what we had in our car to make it work so well, things like that. If they were on a different team, maybe you'd panic or start guessing – okay, we're not on pace – we've got to sell our car wholesale, and then you're going to end up falling short, but I think it's so tight that I think it's just going to be a matter of who gets through to who.”

“We hope everything works out for us, but if not, then obviously we have a couple of team cars – all our cars, there are three in that question mark – it would be great to have all three, but there is a chance we will get more than one.”

The JGR drivers began the race thoroughly. Although Hendrick went 1-2-3 in qualifying, Martin Truex Jr. finished fourth, Christopher Bell sixth and Hamlin eighth. Ty Gibbs, who enters Bristol on a bubble, is a bit further back in thirteenth.

Hamlin reiterated that he’ll attack from the beginning, a far cry from his conservative strategy that proved costly in Atlanta. “I’ll be on the attack, starting right away. I’ll be happy with the outcome — either way — because I know that after 500-plus laps here, everything will fall into place and we’ll have a chance to win.”

Ferrari “should win” in Singapore

0

Fernando Alonso believes Ferrari must have won the Singapore Grand Prix, ending just behind Carlos Sainz.

The Aston Martin driver scored 4 points and finished eighth on the Marina Bay Circuit, ahead of Haas driver Nico Hulkenberg, with whom Alonso shared the identical team, and Charles Leclerc, who finished fifth.

Alonso, who finished in the highest ten for the fourth time in five races, claimed to have outpaced the AMR24’s real-world pace throughout the weekend.

Asked if he managed to get probably the most out of his time, the two-time champion, who finished first among the many overtaken riders, replied: “Yes, absolutely.

“Behind the highest 4 teams, just ahead of Checo, so it’s normally ninth and tenth available. Finishing eighth is a bit higher than our wildest dreams.

“Good points, but still one lap down and never the perfect pace, a difficult automotive to drive all weekend. So yes, we were just lucky to get the points, but you could possibly have been P15 and had the identical feeling.

“I think we should [have] be 15th and 16th. We are eighth, two seconds behind Ferrari. So I don't know if I can do more.”

The Ferrari duo began from a disadvantaged position after a nightmare qualifying session, with Sainz crashing early in his first lap of Q3 after which Leclerc losing his best performance for exceeding track limits.

Leclerc and Sainz were eliminated from the race after showing competitive pace in practice sessions, although two of the three sessions were held in unrepresentative conditions.

However, each drivers' progress was hampered by slower drivers throughout the race they usually were forced to make use of strategies to interrupt into the highest 10. However, Alonso believes the Scuderia would have taken the victory had they been in position.

“The Ferraris were, I mean, they should have won that race, probably. They were the fastest car that weekend.”

Mercedes 'misread the race' in Hamilton Singapore F1 strategy

0

Toto Wolff has admitted that Mercedes “misread the race” regarding Lewis Hamilton’s strategy for the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix.

Hamilton produced a remarkable effort to show the tide in qualifying to take third place in the beginning of the Marina Bay Circuit, moving behind championship protagonists Lando Norris and Max Verstappen.

However, when the tyre blankets were removed for the beginning of the race, Hamilton was one in every of only two drivers, alongside Daniel Ricciardo, to begin on the red-walled soft tyre, while many of the field opted for the medium.

Singapore has a history of small gaps within the early stages of races, given the excessive tyre management utilized by the leading drivers, but McLaren's improved pace allowed Norris to push harder and extend his lead in the primary stage. This hurt Hamilton's strategy, who was unable to increase his stage so far as needed, eventually ending sixth.

Responding to the decision for strategy, team boss Wolff explained: “I believe we misjudged the race.

“We made the choice based on the historic races in Singapore, where the race is sort of a procession, much like Monaco, and we felt that the soft tyres would give him a probability in the beginning.

“That was just about the one opportunity to overtake. It was a foul decision that we made together. It gave the impression of a superb offset, but with the rear tire ratio we had, it was just one-sided and backwards.

“So there was some logic behind it, but of course it was against what we should have decided, but it doesn't change the fact that the car is too slow. Maybe the opponents are in front of us or behind us, but it doesn't change anything.”

Ricciardo's decision to change to soft tyres from the back of the grid backfired and the RB driver eventually pitted for a 3rd time to refute Norris a degree by stealing the fastest lap.

This led to conspiracy theories about RB being linked to Red Bull, but Wolff has denied any wrongdoing by the team.

“I think we’re probably going to have to use all the strategies we know,” he said when asked in regards to the issue.

“I don't think it was dirty play, not at all, it could go to a point. It's within the rules, the drivers weren't unfair to each other. I think it's just about who gets the extra point. No problem.”

Alex Bowman doesn't expect a repeat of Bristol's extreme tyre wear

0

Alex Bowman, who took the pole within the No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet, accomplished 70 consecutive laps of practice and not using a hitch, a feat that last spring saw tire failures occur half as often.

“Yeah, I think it’s back to where it was a year ago,” Bowman explained. “I haven’t really noticed any unusual wear. They’re not dropping that much. So I’m definitely curious to see what the variable is, right? I feel there are loads of smart individuals who will determine what the variable is; between testing here, the spring race, and every part else where the identical things are causing different results.

“I think we're in Bristol a year ago, more so than we were in Bristol in the spring. Unless all the rubber disappears overnight for whatever reason, I think it'll make it a spring race again. But if that doesn't happen, I think it'll be normal Bristol again.”

It is unhappy news for fans who were hoping for a repeat of the chaotic race from earlier this yr which was full of motion and featured 54 lead changes, breaking Bristol's previous record of 40, set greater than three many years earlier.

Numerous guessing

Another think about all that is using PJ1 traction compound along the track’s lower groove Saturday morning, in addition to the cleansing of the upper groove after the Xfinity race. It’s unclear how that may affect things through the race. NASCAR made the choice after discussions with Goodyear, the drivers and the track itself.

Martin Truex Jr. says his team spent all week analyzing data and video footage, “trying to know or guess — because the toughest thing about this piece is that a lot changes.

“You never know what's coming – are we going to race down the hill or up the hill? Are the tires going to wear out like they did in the spring or are they going to wear out like they did in the fall of last year? There's always a lot of questions when you come here, but I think we've got a game plan that we think is the right way for us to approach it and we'll just be able to take it step by step.”

Joey Logano is the one driver who doesn’t must worry in today’s race, as he already has a spot within the Round 12 after winning the primary playoff race in Atlanta.

“It’s not as stressful for me as it is for some people,” the two-time NASCAR Cup champion joked. Asked about tire wear, he noted, “That’s a huge variable. It might be the biggest.”

Like Truex, the Team Penske star isn’t sure what to anticipate. Before practice, he predicted the teams would see an enormous drop in form, but that didn’t occur.

In practice there aren’t any problems

There were no tyre issues during practice, and lap times dropped by only about two to 3 tenths over the course of the 30-lap run. Logano averaged 15.661s over the primary five laps, only dropping to fifteen.991s after the 30-lap run.

“I’m sure a lot of teams have probably made some changes to their cars since the last time,” he continued. “That will help. I thought it was great last time. It’s fun to watch the race, just watch it back. There was so much going on, almost too much, that it was hard to keep up, but it definitely threw the old slider at us that we weren’t ready for. Everyone will be more prepared this time.”

As it stands, it's unlikely we'll see a spectacle that mirrors the spring race, but when tire wear becomes a problem, Denny Hamlin is hopeful NASCAR can maintain a gentle rhythm with caution flag times.

“Just consistency in terms of what’s a caution early is the same caution that’s a caution late,” said Hamlin, who has won the last two Cup races at Bristol. “If you’re going to let guys ride down or up with a flat tire, let them ride it late in the race as well. Just consistency in terms of that. If it’s tight early, call it tight late. If it’s loose early, call it loose late. Those are the only consistencies that the competition is looking for.”
