Martin Truex Jr. is leaving the NASCAR Cup after the 2024 season

0

Truex, 43, had been considering leaving Cup for the past few years, which led him to sign a one-year contract with Joe Gibbs Racing and postpone the choice yearly for so long as possible.

On Friday at Iowa Speedway, Truex officially made his decision – he’ll leave the No. 19 JGR Toyota team at the top of the yr, no matter how his season goes.

“I think the news has been on the Internet all week, so you guys already know, and I don't know who I am here,” a visibly upset Truex said firstly of his news conference. “I just need to allow you to all know that I won't be back full time next yr.

“I'm obviously excited in regards to the remainder of the yr. It means loads to me to see Johnny Morris (owner of sponsor Bass Pro Shops) here. He was a giant supporter of mine. Without him, I wouldn't have been capable of accomplish any of the things I actually have completed.

“It was amazing. It was one hell of a ride. I'm excited about the future. I'm not sure what that looks like yet, but I'm happy with my decision. “

Still, Truex said it has been a “true honor” to work with all the crew members and team owners throughout his profession.

“I won't leave. I will still be around,” Truex insisted. “We will do things together and have fun.”

Truex stays winless in 2024, but sits fifth within the cup standings and is well positioned for an additional playoff appearance.

The experienced driver joined JGR in the beginning of the 2019 season. He has 34 wins at cup level – 32 since 2015 – and has finished worse than fifth in points only thrice within the last 10 seasons. He won his only Cup championship with Furniture Row Racing in 2017.

“I obviously have a lot of respect for Martin,” said JGR owner Joe Gibbs. “I did every thing I could to maintain it going. I feel we’ve got two 40-year-olds at the highest of their game straight away.

Truex's Cup profession spans almost 20 years and includes 673 starts. His first Cup victory got here in 2007 at his home track of Dover (Del.) Motor Speedway. He has won a few of NASCAR's biggest races, including two Coca-Cola 600 wins, a Southern 500 victory and five road course wins, including 4 at Sonoma.

Truex won Xfinity Series championships in 2004-05 for Chance 2 Motorsports and went to Cup to drive for Dale Earnhardt Inc., which eventually merged with Chip Ganassi Racing.

He later drove for Michael Waltrip Racing before joining Furniture Row in 2014. The team ceased operations after 2018, and Truex has been driving for JGR since then.

He has three starts within the Truck Series with one win, five wins in what’s now ARCA East and a pair of victories within the now-defunct International Race of Champions.

A number of tire issues as Gragson leads practice

0

For the primary time this season, Cup teams had a 50-minute rehearsal on Friday, this time since it is the primary race within the series on the 875-mile oval. The track has recently been partially renovated.

With several cars making practice qualifying runs towards the top of the session, Gragson achieved a maximum average speed of 300,000 km/h.

Ty Gibbs was second fast (136.558 mph) and Alex Bowman was third (136.334 mph).

Justin Haley and Chase Elliott rounded out the highest five.

Rounding out the highest ten were Ross Chastain, Harrison Burton, Denny Hamlin, Austin Dillon and Chase Briscoe.

Among drivers who accomplished not less than 10 consecutive laps, Tyler Reddick (who also suffered a right front puncture) had the best average lap speed (135.168 mph), followed by Chastain and Bowman.

About 14 minutes into the session, Gibbs was forced to go away the track after getting a flat on his right front tire, but he managed to maintain his No. 54 Toyota off the Turn 3 wall.

Minutes after returning to the green, Gibbs' Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Christopher Bell also suffered damage to his right front tire, but he hit the wall quite hard between Turns 3 and 4, causing significant damage to the correct side of his No. 20 Toyota.

“I just lost a tire, man. I lost a tire,” Bell said after the incident. When asked about what he learned during his time on the track, he said: “It's kind of what we expected. Lots of grip at the underside and that's what we expected.”

Bell's No. 20 team was forced to maneuver to a spare automobile and may have to begin Sunday's race behind the sector.

About half-hour into the session, Chastain's No. 1 Chevrolet got here to rest on the rear pulley after the left rear tire appeared to fail. It took him almost 13 minutes to tow his automobile on a dolly back to the garage.

Austin Cindric suffered damage to his right front tire and grazed the wall of Turn 2 about 10 minutes into practice. He can even head to the spare automobile and join Bell behind the sector.

Truex says it “just felt like the right time” to retire from full-time

For the past few years, Truex has made the choice yearly whether to return to the show for an additional season – often postponing it for so long as possible.

But the controversy was never about on-track performance. Even though he has yet to record a victory this 12 months, Truex insisted that results played no role.

“We definitely experienced some disappointments this year,” he said. “But it's not enough to make you stop doing what you want. Totally unrelated to performance in any way, shape or form.”

So what was it? Something more elusive and far more subjective.

“I just felt like it was the right time for me,” Truex explained Friday at Iowa Speedway. “Honestly, I've been enthusiastic about it lots over the previous few seasons and I used to be just waiting for that feeling to be positive, like, 'I'm OK, I'm OK, I would like to do something else.'

“Yes, this year was something different for me. I felt it was time to slow down and do something else. It was a great ride.”

Certainly yes.

The 43-year-old resident of Mayetta, New Jersey can boast of a cup profession spanning almost 20 years and almost 700 starts.

He has 34 wins on the Cup level – 32 because the 2015 season – and has finished worse than fifth within the series rankings only thrice within the last 10 seasons. He won his only Cup championship with Furniture Row Racing in 2017.

Truex's profession includes victories in a few of NASCAR's most prestigious races, including two Coca-Cola 600 wins, a victory within the Southern 500 and five road track victories, including 4 at Sonoma (Calif.) Raceway.

“I would say I have accomplished more than I ever thought I would,” Truex said of his profession. “With that being said, there are still loads of things which are heartbreaking, there are loads of things which you could look back on and think, 'Man, I wish this had turned out in a different way.'

“You know, I won the championship, thrice runner-up on this format. This is, I feel, really good. I'm happy with what I've done. I feel like I gave it my all and I feel like I used to be really good at what I did.

“Yes, I'm happy with it. I am satisfied. I feel good, I'm happy. I feel good about it.”

I didn't finish racing

He feels so good that he insisted he’ll proceed to play a job in NASCAR after this season – but he's unsure what form that may take.

His team owner Joe Gibbs said Truex shall be an “ambassador” for Joe Gibbs Racing and “maybe he can talk him into doing a few things.”

Truex definitely seemed willing to listen.

“I still love racing. I'm still going to do some racing. I don't know what, when, how, why, I don't know anything yet,” he said. “I'm going to unravel this. I feel very fortunate to be on this position and to find a way to make this decision alone terms.

“I all the time wanted to do that because there have been times in my profession where I didn't know if I’d have a job in a 12 months, six months or whatever.

“It just feels good to be able to follow your own path, do the things you want to do, and that's what led me to this.”

Sometimes you simply must feel good.

After nine hours of untamed motion, Toyota's Ryo Hirakawa was leading in his No. 8 automobile after former leader Kubica was handed a 30-second stop-and-go penalty for causing an enormous crash on the Mulsanne Straight.

The seventh hour began with a brief but heavy rain as darkness fell, and the #83 Kubica AF Corse Ferrari overtook the #5 factory Porsche by over 45 seconds. Kubica was sliding into the wet because the factory Ferraris remained on slicks, and such were the conditions that Kubica even lapped the No. 51 Ferrari because it slid across the track while waiting for the track to dry.

Full yellow was soon required because the #60 Claudio Schiavoni drove his Iron Lynx Lamborghini GT3 hard into the barrier on the second Mulsanne chicane.

Kubica raised an alarm in regards to the gearbox temperature but was advised to proceed on wet tires, already well ahead of Hirakawa within the No. why the #50 Ferrari returned to second place and Niklas Nielsen gave Kubica the lead, making a net profit while remaining on slick tires.

The first full safety automobile of the race was required when leader Kubica collided at high speed with the delayed No. 15 BMW of Dries Vanthoor, who hit the barriers hard at the top of the Mulsanne straight, with the Belgian limping off complaining of foot pain.

Vanthoor tried to remain on the leading lap and each of them lapped the Manthey Manthey PureRxing Porsche 911 GT3 automobile with the number 92 – “he was racing me and pushing me in the wet,” Kubica complained.

After an extended period of over 90 minutes of safety automobile repairs, during which the dog became loose on the track, the rain returned and commenced again at the top of the eighth hour. The race was green with a lot of the cars running on slicks, with Fred Makowiecki's No. 5 Porsche and Pipo Derani's No. 311 Cadillac remaining within the lead while a lot of the remaining cars pitted to get wet.

Wet Kubica quickly overtook Derani and chased Makowiecki, overtaking him just before the top of the following lap. However, Kubica was given a 30-second stop/go penalty for the clash with Vanthoor.

He increased his 6-second advantage over Hirakawa, who took the lead after Kubica's penalty kick.

After the ninth hour, Laurens Vanthoor was second within the #6 Porsche, 15 seconds behind Hirakawa and 10 seconds ahead of the #7 Toyota of Nyck de Vries.

Kubica returned to sixth, behind Alex Lynn's No. 2 Cadillac; Makowiecki dropped to eleventh place on slicks after his stubborn play went horribly flawed.

Lynn passed the No. 50 Ferrari of Antonio Fuoco to complete fifth, pushing the previously dominant Ferrari back to 5-6-7.

In LMP2, Stephane Richelmi's #10 Vector Sport Oreca lost the category lead throughout the safety automobile phase, which put the #37 Cool Racing automobile in front – despite the incontrovertible fact that Lorenzo Fluxa had earlier spun when entering the pits within the rain. The No. 22 United Autosports and No. 24 Nielsen Racing entries also benefited.

There was more confusion when the No. 30 Duqueine Team automobile caught fire on the Mulsanne straight within the hands of Jakub Ĺšmiechowski.

At the ninth hour Malthe Jakobsen was leading in thirty seventh ahead of Fabio Scherer in twenty fourth and Ben Barnicoat in 183rd AF Corse, with tenth catching them in fourth.

There was drama in the brand new LMGT3 class early within the seventh hour when Maxime Martin, within the leading #46 BMW that he had just taken over from Valentino Rossi, clumsily sent Ben Hanley's badly delayed #23 United LMP2 automobile right into a spin. Martin escaped dry warning for the incident and was driving the No. 92 Manthey PureRxing Porsche, which had a grandstand view of Vanthoor's huge sidebar.

The winning number 70 McLaren then entered the garage in a cloud of steam after Brendon Iribe appeared to have hit something solid.

On the restart after the long safety automobile, Klaus Bachler spun the #92 Porsche into the pits and dropped significantly lower within the order.

This gave the advantage to Richard Lietz's #91 sister, who was not running slicks, but Bachler atoned by charging back to the front of the category in Dennis Olsen's Proton Ford Mustang. Jordan Taylor also stars within the Ferrari 296 Spirit of Race.

Just before the top of the hour, Ahmad Al Harthy turned off Esses within the No. 46 BMW, completely excluding him from the fight for honors.

Liberty Global gains controlling stake in Formula E

The telecommunications sector's share in Formula E will increase to 65%, thus becoming the controlling shareholder of the series, and the remaining 35% might be minority shareholders.

Liberty Global, which initially invested in Formula E 10 years ago, will take over the stake from Warner Bros Discovery and goals to finish the deal before the top of 2024, subject to regulatory approval.

The deal is independent of Liberty Media's ownership of Formula 1 and planned future control of Dorna Sports, which manages MotoGP and the World Superbike championship.

The announcement comes directly as Formula E prepares for its eleventh season with the 2024-25 calendar published on Tuesday, the foremost focus of which might be a double-header in Monaco and a brand new round in Miami with a 17-race schedule.

Jeff Dodds, CEO of Formula E, said the investment would give attention to the automobile's technology, its expanding calendar and promotion of the series.

“The key growth areas were automobile technology. The jump between generations 3.5 and 4 is important, which is able to occur in only two and a half years. It's going to be an incredible race automobile,” Dodds said.

“The second area is where we race, where we take our show on the road and the way we attract recent audiences. This week we announced ours [2024-25] calendar and it's our biggest calendar ever, and as motorsport fans we hope you'll appreciate that it includes some iconic and daring moves.

“The third thing is noise. Working with talent, marketing, PR, community and digital activation to inform more people in regards to the sport we champion has led us to grow our fan base to almost 400 million.

“We are on the cusp of unleashing this exponential growth. That's why having a confident investor like Liberty Global behind us as we expand our reach, spend money on technology and spend money on generating noise is completely crucial.”

“This is a pivotal moment for Formula E. It is, like any sports platform, a moment when Formula E needs capital and conviction,” added Mike Fries, CEO of Liberty Global. “Without a doubt, we intend to provide both at this critical time.”

Super Formula was left without foreign drivers after Pourchaire was replaced

This follows Impul's decision to sign young Toyota driver Hibiki Taira to drive the number 19 SF23, which was originally intended to be promoted by current Formula 2 champion Theo Pourchaire all year long.

Pourchaire was the one 'gaijin' entered within the 2024 Super Formula season, but he left the category after the primary round at Suzuka when a likelihood opened up within the IndyCar Series with Arrow McLaren.

Impul initially replaced Pourchaire with Lexus works driver Ben Barnicoat at Autopolis, ensuring a global presence on the grid within the second round.

However, Barnicoat was at all times intended to switch Pourchaire for only one event, because the Super Formula calendar includes multiple clashes along with his fundamental season within the GTD Pro class of the IMSA SportsCar Championship.

Impul has now decided to advertise Taira, which finished second in each the Super Formula Lights class and the GT300 SUPER GT class last yr, meaning your complete 21-car field will consist entirely of Japanese drivers.

The last time international representation in Japan's highest formula took place was in 1978, throughout the then-called All-Japan Formula 2 Championship.

Taira is currently committed to the Sugo event on June 22-23, and Impul has not yet revealed who will partner Yuji Kunimoto within the Toyota-powered lineup for the remaining five races of the yr. Thanks to this, foreign drivers can re-join the grid later within the season.

Impul is yet to attain a degree within the 2024 Super Formula season, with the team's best result to date being thirteenth place achieved by Barnicoat in his one-off appearance at Autopolis.

Yuji Kunimoto, who moved from KCMG to Impul to drive the number 20 SF24, retired from the season opener at Suzuka before ending nineteenth at Autopolis.

Meanwhile, Pourchaire had a difficult Super Formula debut earlier within the yr in 18th place before prematurely exiting the championship.

The WRC plans to determine a brand new “Command Center” in 2025 that can bring fans closer to the motion

0

The concept, dubbed the 'Command Centre', is an element of the WRC organizer's plan to enhance the championship's ability to deliver developing stories to fans during events.

The organizer worked with teams and manufacturers to extract more data from the cars and increase live interaction between crews and their teams via Formula 1-style team radio.

Live team radio is utilized in several motorsport categories. In the WRC, each stage is currently broadcast live via Rally.TV, but viewers only hear the crews' statements at the tip of the stages, and when motion or incidents occur during a stage, viewers often have no idea what happened.

The technology is being tested in cooperation with M-Sport to further evaluate the systems in Estonia next week as a part of their pre-competition performance ahead of Rally Poland.

“We will test the info, and we would like to check the technology. We will only establish the command center and the outcomes of our tests next 12 months in Monte Carlo,” said WRC competition director Simon Larkin, when asked for an update on the championship plans by Motorsport.com.

“M-Sport testing is ongoing within the evaluation center after which the Estonia testing is coming up, so actual on-site testing.

“We have many technical partners working with us. We have [former Hyundai WRC boss] Andrea Adamo asked us to guide the project, so our plan is to check all year long, but implement in Monte Carlo.

Larkin also revealed that the Command Center project could eventually evolve right into a physical structure within the service park where team representatives will reside during rallies.

“It's the name of the concept. It could just as easily be a building or a physical structure, but we want to create robust, usable, interesting storytelling technology for Monte Carlo,” Larkin added.

“Maybe something like this won't happen in Monte Carlo, but the concept will be implemented. It’s the concept of data-driven storytelling.”

As previously reported, the WRC can be working with helmet manufacturer Stilo to make helmet cameras available on the championship, which is able to enable drivers to view a number of the most difficult roads in motorsport.

Winning Le Mans and Daytona in the identical yr can be 'amazing'

0

The Penske factory squad heads to the blue ribbon round of the World Endurance Championships at Circuit de la Sarthe this week with the highest prize in mind as they give the impression of being to proceed the success they’ve enjoyed to this point in 2024.

Porsche Penske Motorsport's IMSA SportsCar Championship division kicked off its season with a memorable classic victory at Daytona in January, while the WEC side won its opener in Qatar and leads the championship heading into Daytona.

Michael Christensen, who shares the number 5 Porsche 963 with Matt Campbell and Frederic Makowiecki, believes that taking top positions within the two biggest sports automobile races of the yr can be a really significant achievement for the Volkswagen Group brand and its partner Penske.

“It will be amazing,” the Dane told Motorsport.com. “Honestly, there are plenty of things that may be cool to be a component of. I actually dream of winning this race for Porsche Penske Motorsport.

“It can be Porsche's twentieth victory overall and Roger Penske's first victory at Le Mans. And you understand how successful Roger was.

“So this will be a milestone for Roger and for Porsche, and also for us drivers. So it would be a dream for all of us.”

On the prospect of Porsche achieving double endurance success, the driving force of the #6 Porsche, Laurens Vanthoor, added: “It can be something really big if we are able to do it. Also for Penske. So it's going to be quite an iconic yr if we are able to achieve Do It.”

It's been over thirty years since an automaker celebrated victories at Daytona and Le Mans in the identical yr; in 1990, Jaguar won two major enduro races with its Group C-spec XJR-12.

Porsche last achieved success in each races in 1987, when Al Holbert and Derek Bell were a part of the winning line-up in each IMSA and the then World Sportscar Championship.

LMDh Porsche director Urs Kuratle said it was natural for people to expect the German manufacturer to win the endurance race given its pedigree, but there was plenty of motivation within the camp to deliver a breakthrough result this weekend.

“That's what we've been working on for a year, to win here at Le Mans,” Kuratle told Motorsport.com.

“To win Daytona, to win Le Mans, on Monday after the race you’ll ask me how essential it’s to win the championship?!

“Of course, relating to Porsche in endurance racing, you desire to win, you’ve gotten to win and you must win every race because that could be very essential.

“So once you win a trophy for the primary time, you’ve gotten to win the trophy a second time, after which you’ve gotten to win a 3rd time to maintain the trophy again.

“Yes, that's good, but that's also the pressure should you're competing with Porsche and in addition with Penske.

“Penske really delivered [a lot] this yr with [Indy] 500 and all these races. It can be very nice to win against Penske and against Porsche and Penske.

“Let's not forget about Roger too, give this to Roger too. He really wants to win 24-hour races. It is an added incentive for everyone to work hard to achieve this with brands.”

Saturday's qualifying session was shortened from two to 1 resulting from prolonged weather delays, but was still held in groups.

The best five competitors from each group were in the highest ten starts, and the fastest of the ten competitors took pole position.

Larson, who won last weekend's race at Sonoma for his third victory of the 2024 season, was ultimately eliminated last in Group B, which posted significantly more speed than Group A.

This is Larson's fourth pole position of the season and twentieth in his profession.

“It was definitely tough,” Larson said of his qualifying attempt. “It wasn't as difficult as I expected. I just watched everyone (they passed before me) and everybody was really relaxed and nervous. I used to be just attempting to be a bit of below the rim, but I assume.

“My lap was quite smooth and a bit nervous, but it surely wasn't as bad as I expected. It helped that I used to be the last one, I could watch everyone, seek advice from Cliff (Daniels, crew chief) before I left.

“I'm completely happy to take pole position. I used to be hoping for rain and didn't understand how we might qualify.

Reigning series champion Ryan Blaney was second (136.311 mph), Josh Berry was third, William Byron fourth and Brad Keselowski rounded out the highest five.

Rounding out the highest ten were Chase Briscoe (who was fastest in Group A), Kyle Busch, Tyler Reddick, Chase Elliott and Christopher Bell.

Both Bell and Austin Cindric had to maneuver to order cars after crashes in Friday practice, so each can have to begin Sunday's race behind the sphere.
