Abel's win at Indy NXT Portland keeps season title hopes alive

Jacob Abel claimed an exciting victory over Indy NXT Championship leader Louis Foster at Portland International Raceway.

After starting second, Abel made a diving move on Foster, who began from the pole and defended the highest spot for all 35 laps en path to a 0.4103-second victory on the 12-turn, 1.964-mile natural course. It was Abel’s third win of the season, and he’s mathematically the one driver left to challenge Foster for the title, and he now trails Foster by 79 points with two races to go (532-453). Foster had to depart Portland with 108 points to clinch the title.

“It was a really good weekend for us, both in terms of start and finish,” said Abel.

“We didn't come off the trailer at all. We really struggled there in the first practice session, especially against someone like Louis, who won here last year, came in and just kept doing his thing. So a big thanks to the Abel Motorsports crew. I mean, we worked really hard this weekend and yeah, it was a bit tough out there. Of course, he kept putting pressure on me the whole time, but yeah, it was awesome, so a big thanks to everyone.”

Behind Foster within the No. 26 Andretti Global was teammate Bryce Aron in third. HMD Motorsports rookie Caio Collet finished fourth, ahead of fellow rookie Christian Brooks in fifth.

Foster showed the green flag to the sector nevertheless it was his front row mate Abel who turned inside and took the lead into the primary corner.

Meanwhile, typical chaos erupted at Portland’s Turn 1 when competitors behind Abel and Foster collided. Several cars collided, resulting in Josh Pierson, who began eleventh, touching the back of Salvador De Alba Jr. and sending his No. 2 Andretti Cape right into a spin. The result lifted rookies Bryce Aron and Christian Brooks to 3rd and fourth, respectively. James Roe, who began third, dropped to sixteenth within the chaos, while Reece Gold dropped to seventh.

On lap 3 Abel and Foster broke away from the pack, 2 seconds ahead of Aron in third. Abel had a 0.3681 second advantage over Foster, which increased to only over a tenth of a second two laps later.

The yellow card got here on lap 8 after a very optimistic attempt by Juncos Hollinger Racing's Ricardo Escotto to pass Roe on the within at Turn 1. That ended Escotto's race, and Roe rejoined the track three laps behind after a temporary repair.

Abel led the sector to the restart on lap 10 and he and Foster became embroiled in an in depth battle for the lead when the pair touched barely in the center sector of the lap. Foster even called for a lockout over the radio but no motion was taken as Abel held on to the lead and prolonged it to 0.5431s on lap 15.

By the center of lap 18, Abel’s advantage had narrowed barely to 0.3074s over Foster, giving him a beneficial two bonus points for leading probably the most laps. With 10 laps to go, Foster was still trailing Abel, despite being 0.5713s behind. Both had once more pulled away from the remaining of the sector, with Aron 3s in third.

Aron began to shut the gap to the leaders with eight laps to go, closing in on Abel by just 1.5741s.

Abel’s advantage over Foster had fallen to 0.4193s, while Aron was still closing in on the pair at 1.1518s from second place. Aron closed to inside 0.6s of Foster with two laps to go, and Abel prolonged his advantage to 0.6329s. Abel accelerated to the finish with none drama, while Foster was second over Aron.
