The IndyCar Series enters a brand new era with the official debut of the highly anticipated hybrid powertrain on the 13-turn, 2.258-mile road course in Lexington, Ohio.
Chevrolet and Honda’s collaboration on a first-of-its-kind hybrid vehicle will mix the present 2.2-litre twin-turbocharged V6 petrol engine with supercapacitor hybrid technology.
A low-voltage (48V) motor-generator unit (MGU) is paired with an energy storage system (ESS), each housed within the bell housing between the engine and gearbox. The MGU generates power, which is stored in 20 ESS supercapacitors. Additional power is distributed by the identical motor-generator unit upon driver request.
The hybrid powertrain (280 kilojoules per lap at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course) shall be available along with the standard push-to-pass on the road and street circuits (200 seconds with a maximum of 20 seconds per push at Mid-Ohio). When utilized in conjunction, the package will provide an extra 120 horsepower on demand by the driving force, for a complete of greater than 800 horsepower.
There have been six different winners within the eight points-paying races within the 2024 season: Pato O'Ward (St. Petersburg*), Scott Dixon (Long Beach, Detroit), Scott McLaughlin (Barber), Alex Palou (Indianapolis Road Course, Laguna Seca), Josef Newgarden (Indianapolis 500) and Will Power (Road America). The record for essentially the most different winners in a season is 11 in 2000, 2001 and 2014.
*O'Ward was awarded the win after Newgarden was disqualified for illegally overtaking.
This shall be the forty first IndyCar Series race at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Johnny Rutherford won the primary IndyCar race at Mid-Ohio in 1980.
Dixon is the IndyCar driver with essentially the most wins at Mid-Ohio with six wins (2007, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2019). Other past winners within the category include Newgarden (2017, 2021), Graham Rahal (2015), Alexander Rossi (2018), Power (2020-race-1), Herta (2020-race-2), Scott McLaughlin (2022) and Palou (2023).
Fifteen drivers have won the race from the pole: Mario Andretti (1984), Bobby Rahal (1985), Roberto Guerrero (1987), Teo Fabi (1989), Michael Andretti (1990, 1991), Al Unser Jr. (1994), Alex Zanardi (1996), Patrick Carpentier (2002), Paul Tracy (2003), Dixon (2011), Simon Pagenaud (2016), Rossi (2018), Power (2020-Race 1), Herta (2020-Race 2) and Newgarden (2021). Power has won five pole positions at Mid-Ohio, essentially the most of any driver.

Firestone Tire Allocation: Six sets of primary, 4 sets of spares for use in the course of the weekend of the event. Teams must use one set of primary and one recent set of spare tyres unless wet conditions are declared. One additional set is out there for the primary session of the weekend for teams fielding a novice driver.
